Nurturing Growth: Perspectives and Practices in Innovation Ecosystem Building

The CIFAR Ecosystem Playbook documents CIFAR Alliance's journey into building innovation ecosystems, particularly focused on climate resilience, adaptation, and finance. Faced with a fragmented and under-resourced innovation landscape, as well as the urgent need for climate resilience, the CIFAR Alliance represents a crucial partnership for action.

At the heart of the CIFAR Alliance is the goal of bridging the gap between climate innovation and finance. It serves as a collaborative hub, connecting diverse stakeholders - innovators, donors, investors, think tanks, development agencies, and corporations.

This Playbook outlines the Alliance's unique approach, focused on two key innovator archetypes:

  1. System Innovators: These are the architects of the ecosystem, developing holistic, top-down solutions to enhance the overall functionality of the innovation landscape.

  2. Product Innovators: Often agile startups, these grassroots-level innovators bring creativity and responsiveness to address specific market needs.

To foster trust and collaboration within this ecosystem, the CIFAR Alliance has established four core pillars:

  1. Sensemake: Learning and understanding the complex landscape

  2. Connect: Facilitating meaningful connections between stakeholders

  3. Launch: Initiating experimental initiatives to drive progress

  4. Grow: Expanding the reach and impact of the ecosystem

Through these pillars, the CIFAR Alliance leverages its ecosystem services to drive progress in climate resilience and adaptation. Learn more about our approach and explore opportunities to get involved.
